How to keep your pets cool during a heatwave

Considering that climate is changing, it’s important to keep your pets and other animals under your care and cool in this heat.

Provide lots of fresh water

Your pets will become dehydrated quickly in hot weather. Therefore, it is critically important to provide them with lots of fresh clean water from two or more bowls in different locations.

Shade

Never leave any animal confined outdoors without access to shade. In addition to shade, dogs that are confined outdoors might enjoy a shallow children’s swimming pool filled with water so they can soak in it and cool off.

Keep small caged animals indoors

Caged animals like rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters and birds can be kept cooler by placing their cages on the tile floor of a bathroom or in an empty bathtub.

NEVER leave any animal in a car, even “for just a few minutes”

Never ever ever leave any living creature in your vehicle for any length of time, even if the windows are open.

Don’t walk your dog on hot surfaces

Walking your dog during the heat of the day or in the evening before the pavement (or sandy beach) has cooled can result in serious burns to their foot pads, even if they are on pavement for only a few minutes.
